In basketball, it is fun to make the flashy plays, but having a mastery of the fundamentals is more important. The fundamentals are the building blocks of basketball and include, dribbling, passing, and proper shooting. Without without focusing on them, advanced techniques in those three areas become difficult to execute effectively as a player. Players who master the basics can adapt to any level of play.
Tip: Practice makes progress. No player will ever be perfect, but with focused repetition of fundamental drills they will put themselves in a position to win.

Fundamental skills are a key competent in developing basketball IQ. Players who are comfortable with their dribbling, passing, and shooting can focus more on reading the game. That confidence will help them make smart decisions when to drive, pass, or shoot.
Tip: Include game-like scenarios in training. Put time on the clock and practice end of game scenarios to challenge players to make the right decisions.
