How to Help Your Child Prepare for Their First Club Season

Updated: Jan 23

Starting a club basketball season is an exciting opportunity for young players to progress and grow, but it can also feel overwhelming. At Hill Country Hoops, believe in the untapped potential of every player and want to help them succeed no matter what their current skill level is. Below are a few recommendations to help your player feel at ease and perform their best.

1. Focus on Fundamentals

Before the season begins, make sure your child has a strong foundation in basic basketball skills like dribbling, passing, and shooting. Even without a hoop, players can work on passing and dribbling drills that can help them prepare for tryouts. Even doing as little as 15-20 minutes a day on dribbling drills over an extended period of time will improve your player dramatically.

Tip: Follow us on our social media channels to see drills we recommend that you can do at home without a hoop.

2. Build Physical Fitness

Club basketball often involves multiple games in a single day and sometimes we will have games the following day as well. Encourage your child to focus on conditioning by doing drills at "game speed" when practicing basketball or by playing other sports.

Tip: Try to be active at least 5 days a week to keep your conditioning in check.

3. Teach Mental Preparation

Club basketball is competitive, and players may get discouraged if they are not performing at the level they want to. Each player should focus on effort over outcomes, and remember that mistakes are opportunities to learn and are apart of the process of improving.

Tip: Practice visualizing winning plays and playing hard so when it comes time to play, the player has already seen their success in their own mind.

4. Equip Them with the Right Gear

Having the proper shoes and basketball will go a long way in preparing the player for success. Ensure your child has:

  • High-quality basketball shoes for support and performance.

  • A durable basketball for practice at home.

  • A water bottle to stay hydrated during long tournaments.

  • Recover after workouts the right way by getting quality meals, good sleep, and stretching.

Tip: Label their gear to prevent mix-ups during games or practices.

5. Encourage Teamwork

Club basketball is about more than individual performance—it’s about playing as a team. Remind your child to never be a spectator in basketball. Always think about what they can be doing to help the team, set a screen, rebound, help on defense, stay focused. Try to always make the best play for the team, not necessarily for the individual player.

Tip: Use family discussions to emphasize the importance of being a supportive and positive teammate even when things are not going your way.

6. Manage Expectations

Help your child set realistic goals for their first club season. Success isn’t just about winning; it’s about improving skills, building confidence, making new friends, and having fun.

Tip: After each game, focus on discussing what went well and how they can improve, rather than just the final score. Most kids understand when they have underperformed, try to encourage them with the "sandwich approach." Say one positive thing, followed by a critique, then end with another positive.

7. Stay Organized

Club seasons involve practices, games, and travel. Use tools like TeamSnap or a shared family calendar to keep track of schedules and ensure your child stays on top of commitments.

Tip: It is a good idea to pack a "game day bag" the night before a tournament with essentials like snacks, extra socks, and their jersey to avoid last-minute stress.
