Top Ball Handling Drills for Young Athletes

Updated: Jan 9

Mastering ball handling is crucial for becoming a versatile player. Here are some effective drills to include in your basketball workout:

  1. Figure Eight Dribble

Improve hand-eye coordination and control by dribbling the ball around and through your legs in a figure-eight motion. Focus on keeping your dribble low and controlled—this drill is a staple in youth basketball training.

  2. Two-Ball Dribbling

Use two basketballs to practice dribbling simultaneously with both hands. This drill enhances ambidexterity and confidence, essential skills for players competing in AAU basketball tournaments.

  3. Spider Dribble

Tap the ball in a rapid motion between both hands, alternating front and back. This is excellent for developing speed and precision during a basketball dribble workout.

  4. Cone Weaving

Set up cones in a zigzag pattern and practice navigating through them with crossovers, behind-the-back, or between-the-legs moves. This drill mimics game scenarios and helps build confidence for in-game situations.

Ball handling workouts are vital for players aiming to compete at higher levels. Whether you’re part of an AAU team or new to the sport, these exercises can make a significant impact.
